Cycling routes safe for families and beginners expand across Paddington parks
Marked paths through local green spaces give new riders and parents with children steady options away from busy traffic.
How we reported this
Paddington Memorial Park added 2.8 kilometres of dedicated family cycling lanes on 1 July, complete with speed limits of 15 kilometres per hour and regular rest stops equipped with water fountains.
The routes opened after the Paddington Community Fitness Group recorded a 22 percent rise in requests for beginner-friendly outdoor activities between January and June this year. Residents have cited warmer evenings and school holiday schedules as reasons for seeking low-stress ways to cycle together.
Marked paths near Given Terrace and Rosalie Green
The new lanes run from the eastern edge of Paddington Memorial Park along the quiet section of Given Terrace before linking to the flat circuit at Rosalie Green. Both locations sit within the same neighbourhood and feature wide, sealed surfaces free of steep grades. The Paddington Community Fitness Group runs a free monthly orientation ride on the second Saturday, starting at 8 am from the park entrance on Enoggera Road.
Signs at each junction list distances to the next rest point and note nearby cafés on Latrobe Street where families can pause. The group also supplies loaner helmets and child seats for the first three sessions of any new participant.
Practical steps before heading out
Registration for the next orientation ride opens online on 12 July at a cost of $5 per adult and free for children under 12. Riders can download the route map from the group’s site or pick up a paper copy at the Paddington Library branch on Caxton Street. Local bike shops on Given Terrace offer a $35 tune-up package that includes a safety check and basic instruction on gear shifting.
Participants are advised to arrive 15 minutes early for a quick group briefing on hand signals and road positioning. The full loop at Rosalie Green measures 1.4 kilometres and can be repeated or shortened depending on the group’s pace.
